Te Fare Manaha Museum
The Musée de Tahiti et des îles – Te Fare Manaha, which was opened in 1974, provides cultural enthusiasts with a comprehensive exhibition of approximately 30,000 artifacts from Polynesian culture.
This is one of the top museums in the South Pacific, located near the Pointe des Pecheurs (fishermen’s point). Its exhibits, which are housed on the site of an ancient marae, present the tale of Polynesian history and culture extending back thousands of years.
You’ll witness reproductions of historic sailing vessels, equipment, and relics, as well as learn about tattooing and traditional weaving and quilting techniques.
Make time to learn about the history, art movements, and natural features of Tahiti and the other 118 Polynesian islands. You won’t get a more in-depth look at South Seas culture anywhere else.
The museum is housed in a historic marae and is divided into various divisions. Tools, fabrics and clothes, boats, jewelry, and musical instruments are among the 12,000 items in the ethnological collection. The Natural History Section contains a herbarium, a shell and mollusk display, and an ornithological collection.
The Fine Arts Collection includes graphics, book editions, paintings, statues, petroglyphs, and more. There has also been a photo exhibition with historical images since 2004. Furthermore, the museum hosts a changing exhibition on various aspects of Polynesian culture.
